Trillium gas pipe upgrade

Case study: Trillium Flow Technologies

Appointed by Trillium Flow Technologies (soon to become Flowserve), we delivered a new gas distribution system at its manufacturing facility in Alloa. Following the identification of multiple leaks in the existing pipework, we were commissioned to design and install a modern, compliant system to support the facility’s ongoing operations. This technically demanding project involved the installation of more than 1,300 metres of gas pipework supplying 91 appliances across the site.

The project demonstrates our expertise in complex mechanical infrastructure upgrades, alongside our commitment to safety, quality and collaborative delivery.

The Challenge

During routine servicing works at Trillium Flow Technologies’ Alloa facility, a gas-tightness test identified multiple leaks within the existing pipework system. Given the scale of the issue, a comprehensive redesign was recommended to bring the installation up to current standards and provide long-term reliability.

The project required a carefully engineered solution tailored to the manufacturing facility’s specific requirements. With an extensive network of pipework and 91 appliances to accommodate, detailed site surveys and planning were essential to ensure the new infrastructure would meet operational needs.

Equally important was the need to deliver the works safely while minimising disruption to the live manufacturing environment. This called for close coordination with Trillium’s operations management team, proactive project management and the ability to respond effectively to unexpected challenges throughout the installation.

The Solution

Following a series of detailed site surveys and a competitive tender process, James Ramsay was appointed to design and deliver the new gas distribution system, with work commencing on site in January 2026.

The substantial scope of works included the installation of more than 1,300 metres of gas pipework, ranging in diameter from 16 inches to one inch, supplying 91 separate appliances across the facility. Our engineers have maintained a regular on-site presence five days a week, enabling consistent progress while ensuring the works are carefully coordinated with the client’s operational requirements.

Andrew McLaughlan, Project Manager, led the initial surveys and has managed the project throughout, supported by project manager Paul Hamilton, mechanical foreman George Brand Smith and the wider engineering team. Working collaboratively with Trillium’s operations management team, our engineers have focused on maintaining safe working practices, resolving issues efficiently and minimising disruption throughout delivery.

Impact

The completion of phase one marks a significant milestone in upgrading the gas infrastructure at Trillium Flow Technologies’ Alloa manufacturing facility.

Once fully complete, the new system will provide modern, compliant infrastructure designed to support the site’s ongoing manufacturing operations and deliver long-term reliability. The project also highlights our ability to manage large-scale, technically complex mechanical installations within live industrial environments, combining detailed engineering expertise with responsive project management and strong client communication.

Craig Brown, Facilities Manager at Trillium Flow Technologies’ Alloa site, said: “James Ramsay has demonstrated a consistently professional and proactive approach throughout the project, from the initial surveys through to delivery on site. Given the scale and complexity of the works, there have inevitably been unexpected issues and challenges along the way, but what has impressed me most is how the team has responded.

“They have acted quickly, kept us informed and worked with us to find practical solutions, always with our best interests in mind. For me, that is the real measure of a contractor. Things can change on any project, but having a team that communicates well, takes ownership and works collaboratively to resolve issues makes a significant difference.

“We’ve been very pleased with the way James Ramsay has managed the project and with the progress achieved so far. The completion of phase one is a significant milestone for the site, and we look forward to working with the team as we move towards completion.”
