Building our business through apprenticeships: celebrating past, present and future during National Apprenticeship Week

As National Apprenticeship Week comes to a close, it’s the perfect opportunity to reflect on the long-term impact apprenticeships have had on our business — not just in developing skills, but in shaping the people and leadership that drive our business forward.

Apprenticeships have been a cornerstone of our approach to workforce development for decades. Many of the individuals who play key roles in the business today began their careers with us as apprentices, learning their trade on the job and growing alongside the company.

From apprentices to leaders

Our Managing Director, Gary Shepherd, started his career through an apprenticeship, a journey that highlights the opportunities apprenticeships create for progression, leadership and long-term success within the business.

That same pathway has been followed by colleagues across the organisation, including:

  • Marc Millar, Steam & Technical Project Manager
  • John Milligan, Foreman
  • Heating Engineers: Ross Mowat, Malky Aitken, Stevie McNeil, Colin Bright and Stuart McBeth
  • Kyle Munro, Service Engineer

Each of these team members began their careers as apprentices and now play a vital role in delivering the high-quality engineering services our clients rely on every day.

Celebrating success

We’re also proud to celebrate Thomas Quinn, who successfully completed his apprenticeship and is now a fully qualified heating engineer. His progression is another great example of how apprenticeships provide a clear route into skilled, sustainable employment.

Investing in the next generation

Alongside our experienced team, we continue to invest in the future through our current apprentices, who represent the next generation of engineers at James Ramsay:

  • Dylan Rush – 1st year service & maintenance
  • Jamie Gorman – 1st year heating & ventilation
  • Jamie McPhee – 2nd year heating & ventilation
  • Sam Buchanan – 2nd year heating & ventilation
  • Euan Caddell – 3rd year heating & ventilation
  • Paul Clancy – 4th year heating & ventilation
  • Daniel Robertson – 4th year service & maintenance

Each apprentice is developing technical expertise, professionalism and skills for life, supported by experienced mentors and strong partnerships with local education providers.

A foundation for long-term success

The success of James Ramsay today, and our confidence in the future, is built on the commitment, loyalty and expertise of people who started their careers with us as apprentices.

As we conclude National Apprenticeship Week for another year, we’re proud of every apprentice, past and present, who has contributed to our business. Their journeys demonstrate the real, lasting value of apprenticeships — not just for individuals, but for the long-term success of engineering businesses like ours.
