Investing in skills for the future: why apprenticeships matter

Apprenticeships are not a short-term solution to skills shortages – they are a long-term investment in the future of our business and the engineering industry as a whole.

Engineering relies on skilled, knowledgeable and safety-conscious people. Developing that capability takes time, commitment and the right support. That’s why apprenticeships sit at the heart of how we attract, develop and retain the best people for the future.

A long-term commitment

Delivering a successful apprenticeship programme requires significant investment – not just financially, but in time, training and mentorship. From day one, apprentices at James Ramsay are supported by experienced engineers, supervisors and managers who are committed to helping them develop both technical expertise and essential workplace skills.

Alongside hands-on experience on live projects, our apprentices benefit from structured learning through local education providers, including City of Glasgow College and Glasgow Kelvin College. This partnership approach ensures apprentices gain industry-relevant qualifications while applying what they learn in real working environments.

The result is a well-rounded approach to training that builds confidence, competence and professionalism.

Developing skills for life

An apprenticeship offers far more than technical training. It helps young people develop skills for life – teamwork, communication, problem-solving, time management and an understanding of health and safety culture. These skills are essential in engineering, but they also create strong, adaptable individuals who can grow with the business during the long term.

Many of our current engineers and supervisors began their careers as apprentices, progressing through the business as their skills and experience developed. Their journeys demonstrate the value of investing early and providing clear pathways for progression.

Supporting the industry and local communities

By working closely with local colleges and training providers, James Ramsay plays an active role in supporting employability and skills development within the communities we serve. Apprenticeships help ensure the engineering sector continues to thrive, while providing individuals with the opportunity to build stable, rewarding careers close to home.

Ian Mathieson, Business Director at James Ramsay, said: “Apprenticeships are fundamental to the future of our business and the wider engineering industry. They require a significant investment, but it’s one we believe in. By working in partnership with local education providers and supporting apprentices throughout their development, we’re not just filling roles – we’re building skills, confidence and long-term careers that will strengthen James Ramsay for years to come.”

The way ahead

As we mark National Apprenticeship Week 2026, we remain committed to developing talent, supporting education partnerships and creating opportunities for the next generation of engineers.

By investing in apprenticeships today, we are securing the skills, experience and people needed to deliver high-quality engineering solutions well into the future.
