Driving decarbonisation at Claremont House with Verde

As part of a wider decarbonisation strategy, the student accommodation building at Claremont House required a modern, low-carbon solution to replace traditional systems. Appointed by Verde Services, James Ramsay installed an advanced air source heat pump system to support the building’s transition to more sustainable energy.

This project highlights our ability to deliver complex decarbonisation solutions within a live environment, combining technical excellence with a proactive, partnership-led approach. From initial tender through to project completion and beyond, our focus remains the same: delivering reliable, future-proofed systems that support clients on their journey to net zero.

The Challenge
Following the failure of an existing gas-led hot water solution at Claremont House, a prominent multi-occupancy building, it was decided that the entire system would be modernised. The objective was to remove the requirement for traditional fossil fuels while maintaining reliable, efficient hot water for occupants.

Working on behalf of Verde, the project called for the installation of a modern, low-carbon solution that could integrate seamlessly into an existing building environment—without disrupting day-to-day operations.

The Solution
Following a formal tender process, James Ramsay was appointed to deliver the mechanical installation works, reflecting our strong reputation for quality, technical expertise and proven track record across Scotland.

The scope of works included the installation of four air source heat pumps, a 1500L thermal store, two 250kW plate heat exchangers and two 1000L buffer vessels, alongside all associated pipework and integration into the building’s existing infrastructure. Careful planning and coordination were essential to ensure the system could be installed efficiently while aligning with the wider decarbonisation objectives of the project.

By leveraging our in-house expertise and collaborative approach, our team worked closely with Verde and the other project stakeholders to ensure smooth delivery from start to finish.

Impact
The successful installation of the air source heat pump system marks a major step forward in reducing the building’s carbon footprint while delivering a reliable and future-ready heating solution.

Despite the complexities often associated with retrofit decarbonisation projects, the works were completed to a high standard, reinforcing our reputation for delivering technically demanding projects with experience and professionalism.

The success of Claremont House has also strengthened the working relationship between James Ramsay and Verde. As a result, we have since been appointed to support a further decarbonisation project—this time at the Glasgow Ballet School student accommodation, where six gas-fired water heaters will be replaced with electric boilers, with future plans to transition to a solar-powered electrical supply.
